New Works by The APPEX Ensemble

Recasting traditional melodies and rhythms into new sounds and textures, and adapting musical styles in a joyful collaboration that speaks to collapsing boundaries and exploring new frontiers, this unique event features internationally renowned artists hailing from Asia and the United States. Together, these longtime friends gather for the first time in years to offer a joy-filled evening of creativity, music, and song, outdoors on the Japanese American National Museum Plaza. The artists include Abhijit Banerjee, tabla maestro from India; I Dewa Putu Berata, master Indonesian percussionist from Bali; Kenny Endo, acclaimed taiko drummer from Hawaii; Kyaw Kyaw Naing, leading exponent of the pat waing (circle drum) of Burma; Qi-Chao Liu, celebrated Chinese wind instrumentalist living in Los Angeles; and Emiko Susilo, a world-class vocalist from Bali/USA.

Sponsored in part by the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and The James Irvine Foundation. This event complements the exhibition Big Drum: Taiko in America, on view at the Japanese American National Museum through January 8, 2006.
